Matching bee tattoos on two feet
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two bare feet rest on weathered wooden boards, each with a small bee tattoo on the top of the foot and a dotted line curling away from it. The bees are outlined in fine black linework with black and yellow striped bodies and grey wings. The sparse layout leaves plenty of plain skin around the designs.

You have been up since three, long enough that the flour in the creases of your knuckles has stopped feeling like dust and started feeling like part of you. The ovens ticked as they warmed. Outside the shutter the lane was still blue-black, and the only thing moving was a bee that had come in with the milk delivery and refused to leave.

It was a fat, drowsy thing, bumbling along the rim of the honey jar Mrs Okonedo had left on the counter for the wholemeal loaves. You watched it crawl the tin's edge, stop, rub its legs together, and set off again in a looping wander across the scrubbed wood, leaving nothing behind but a faint line in the flour dust. You followed it with a fingertip. Little dotted hops, a curl, a turn back toward the door. Someone who had drawn that path once would have called it a trail. You called it a nuisance and reached for a cloth.
Then you stopped. The bee had found the open window, the grey gap where the first wind of morning came in smelling of cut grass and the canal. It paused on the sill, warmed its wings, and seemed to weigh the bakery against the world. You thought of the orchard your grandfather kept, the hives stacked like white drawers, and how he used to say a bee that wakes early is never lost, only early.
At half past five the bread came out, crackling and pale gold. You set the first loaf on the cooling rack and, when you looked up, the sill was empty and the window stood a little wider than you had left it. You told no one. The honey jar, you noticed later, had a new small smudge of gold on its lid, and a thin dotted line running out under the door into the lane.
