Two wrists are pressed together, each with a small black outline tattoo. The left wrist shows a crescent moon with a small five-point star, and the right shows a rayed sun with a star above it. The thin, even linework is set against plain skin with a light, neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp oil has gone thick in the cold, and you are the one who must carry the bronze dish up the four hundred steps before the sun slips behind the harbour mole. Your brother Teon is already at the rail, counting boats with a knotted cord, his fingers blue at the tips. He says the sun will be late tonight. You tell him the sun is never late, only you are slow on the stairs.

Each evening the two of you trade the work. At dusk he lights the flame on the seaward side while you trim the wicks on the landward one, and at dawn you swap again so neither of you has to look straight into the glare. Your mother made the rule the year the moon went down behind Pharos. She never said it fell. She said it had gone under to rest. You were nine and believed her, and Teon, who was twelve, pretended he did too.

Tonight the wind turns and the flame starts to gutter. You cup it with your palm until the skin blisters, and you hold it there while Teon runs down for more oil. When he returns he finds you sitting against the parapet, laughing at a single point of light you can see through the smoke, steady as a nail driven into the sky. He hands you the cord. Count them, he says. You have only reached the fourth boat when the sun comes up grey and reluctant over the water, and you tie a knot for each ship that came home, then one more for the star that waited for you to look.
