Key and heart tattoos on two ankles
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two black ink tattoos sit on the ankles of two people, one showing a key with an ornate bow, scrolled bit and small flower motif, and the other a solid heart with a keyhole and scrollwork inside. The linework is bold and clean, with solid black fills and no visible shading. The black and white photograph is framed closely on the lower legs, with the two tattoos placed diagonally across the frame.

The Constance Ann had been locked for nine days when Nell Tregear finally took the bunch of keys down from the hook in her father's kitchen. Nobody in Porthavel could say which one opened the wheelhouse, only that her grandfather had worn a brass key on a loop of tarred twine and never once let it out of his sight. The harbourmaster was patient. The tide was not.

She found it at the bottom of the bait box, under a coil of old marline: a little key with a bow like a fiddle scroll and a stamped flower on the bit. Beside it sat a second key, smaller and plainer, which she tried first on the wheelhouse door and then on her own front gate for no good reason at all. The wheelhouse keyhole was cut in the shape of a heart, scrolled at the top like the wave curls painted on the hull, and the first key slid in and stuck. She wiggled it the way Grandad used to, lifting slightly, and felt the bolt give.
Inside, the wheelhouse smelled of diesel and peppermint. Pinned above the wheel was a photograph of Ada Tregear in a yellow headscarf, and tucked behind it a card in a looping hand: Bring her home, whichever of you is steering. Nell had thought it was a joke when she first read it. Now she took the wheel and felt the old boat settle under her feet, the way it always had when someone who loved it was on board.
She pulled the door shut behind her and left the key in the lock, not turning it, so the heart stayed open to the wind. By the time the Constance Ann cleared the breakwater, the harbourmaster was waving his cap from the quay and the sun was coming up over Gull Rock. Nell did not look back at the house. She had a boat to bring in before dark.
