Sun, star and crescent moon wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small tattoos sit on three different wrists or inner forearms, each a single thin black outline: a sun with a ring of short rays, a five-pointed star and a crescent moon. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the image is shot close up on a light background. The tattoos are small and centred on each arm, with the hands gathered together at the bottom of the frame.

At half past three the only light in the bakery is the bare bulb over the proving bench, and you work beneath it with dough cool and heavy under your palms. Ruth has rung the church twice about the tea urns. Out back, Dev is dragging sacks of strong white flour up from the cellar and swearing softly, which means he is happy. Through the window the moon hangs above the bins in the car park, thin as a clipped fingernail, and nobody else on Mill Lane is awake to see it.

The three of you agreed on the symbols the spring you signed the lease, when Mrs Pryce handed over the keys and a biscuit tin full of handwritten recipe cards. Ruth chose the sun because she is the one who unlocks the shutters before anyone else is up. Dev chose the star for the late orders he counts into the till. You took the moon, because you were always the one who stayed on after the others had gone home, watching the dough rise in the dark and waiting for the sky to change its mind.
The timer goes. You slide the first tray out, and the crust crackles like a struck match. Dev wanders in wiping his forehead and says the moon has slipped behind the old gasworks. Ruth, hauling up the shutter, says it always goes when the sun is ready, and you think she is joking until you see the grey thinning over the rooftops.
The sun comes up the way the bread does, slowly and then all at once. By the time the first customer knocks on the glass, the loaves are cooling on the racks in a row of gold, and the window has turned the colour of warm butter. You wipe the flour from your hands and open the door.
