Small dotted bow on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small bow outline is tattooed on the side of a finger, drawn as a dotted line in a single dark ink. The bow has a loop on each side and two short tails crossing below the knot. The background is out of focus with warm and white bokeh lights.

The pounce pattern had been folded in four so often that its creases had gone soft as flannel. Ruth Ackroyd held it up to the back-room window to check the holes lined up, each one a pinprick made with a brass wheel that hummed like a wasp. Across the road a lamp flickered on and off as someone downstairs argued with a kettle, and the wet pavements threw back the light in long yellow smears.

Her apprentice, Dilys, sat on the high stool with a bridal cuff across her knees and watched the dots the way other girls her age watched the wireless. She was sixteen and had already decided that Bradford was too small for her, so she sewed as if every stitch were a ticket out. Ruth let her talk. Dilys wanted to know why the tails of the bow crossed under the knot instead of lying straight. Ruth told her that her own mother had done it that way, so the bow would lie flat when somebody tugged the wrong end, and that a dotted line was the only honest part of any pattern because the cloth had not yet been asked to commit.

The order was for a gown with a bow at the small of the back, for a bride leaving on the Tuesday train for Halifax. Ruth tapped the chalk through the holes and a fine grey dust drifted onto the satin like first snow. Dilys set her needle to the first loop. Her stitches wandered, and her face went red, and Ruth said nothing and did not unpick a single one. When the bow was finished, Dilys knotted the thread and held the hem up to the light. Chalk had settled in the creases of her knuckles, and when she flexed her hand it left a faint dotted line along her finger, pale and wavering, just the shape of where she had been.
