Matching Not Tired lettering on two forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms, one lighter and one darker in skin tone, each carry the same black script lettering reading Not Tired, with smaller block capitals reading I GOT THIS beside it. The lettering uses bold, solid black strokes with some shading and a slight drop shadow across the letterforms. The photo is taken outdoors against a grey surface, with the tattoos sitting side by side in the frame.

The fair came into Haddon Cross the week the summer ran out, and the strongman's apprentice was not allowed to sleep past six. Marigold Vane had the job of rolling out the big canvas and keeping the goats off the guy ropes, and she did it all with a yawn you could have hung washing on. Her cousin Tobias, who carried the ticket box and never once counted it right, would stand at the gate and tell anyone who asked that he was not tired, not in the slightest.

One grey morning the lamp-man found them both asleep against the ferris wheel, heads on the same sack of sawdust. He pinned a notice to the booth saying the fair would not open until the children were awake, and the crowd grumbled, and the rides stayed still. Tobias woke first, saw the notice, and took the ink pot from the candy stall. He wrote NOT TIRED across the back of his own hand in fat curling letters, then leaned over and did the same to Marigold's wrist while she dozed.
She woke with the ink still wet and laughed so hard the goats came running. Then she wrote I GOT THIS underneath in small square capitals, because somebody had to, and the lamp-man, reading it upside down, decided the fair could open after all. Years later nobody at Haddon Cross could say which of them had the steadier hand, only that the letters never once smudged, even when the rain came sideways off the fens.
