Matching script tattoos on two arms
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two identical lines of angular, symbol-based script run horizontally across pale skin, one on each arm. The strokes are thin and black, with even weight and no visible shading. The image is a close crop, with the lower tattoo partly cut off at the bottom edge and the upper one centred against a soft, neutral background.

Ada had the telegram form half filled before the 6.40 pulled out, and she was still turning the pencil over when the stationmaster came to ask whether the Carlisle line was clear. "Ten minutes," she said, without looking up. The code was her brother's invention, the kind of thing boys make up in a cold loft: every letter bent into a hook or a notch, so that a message would look like scratches on a ticket stub to anyone who did not hold the key.

She had the key in her head. Ivo had left it with her the spring he enlisted, written on the back of a timetable, and she had burned the paper but kept the arrangement anyway. Seven notches meant a name. A hook turned left meant a place. The line she needed to send was short, and she wrote it out twice, once for the wire and once for herself, so she would know she had not drifted.
The message went out at eleven past six. By the time the answer came back the platform lamps were lit and the porter was sweeping coal dust toward the drain. The reply was one word in the same angular hand: a place name, and beneath it, in a different stroke, the hook that meant come home.
Ada folded the flimsy into her glove and walked out past the ticket barrier without a word to anyone. Behind her the signal dropped and the rails began to hum.
