Matching pink bow tattoos with script quotes
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
The image is split diagonally into two photographs of skin on the lower back, each showing a small pink bow with dark outlines. Black cursive script sits above the left bow reading To infinity and beside the right bow reading And beyond. The bows have shaded pink colour, while the lettering is solid black, and the framing is tight on the tattoos against plain skin and blue fabric at the top.

The lambing shed lamp hums, and you are kneeling in straw at four in the morning with your sleeves shoved up because the ewe has turned the wrong way again. Your gran's pink ribbon is in your back pocket, the one she used to knot on the gate latch so you could find the right field in the dark. Margaret, the vet's daughter, holds the torch between her teeth and says nothing, which is how you know she is frightened too.

The first lamb comes out big and bawling. The second comes out grey and limp, and you rub it with hay until it coughs and tries to stand on legs like wet string. The ewe has no milk for it, not yet, so you take the ribbon from your pocket and tie a bow on the lamb's neck, the way she tied it on the gate. Margaret laughs, a short cracked sound, and says that's the daftest thing she has ever seen, and then she sets a bucket of warm milk on the bale beside you without another word.
All through February the two of you work the shed in shifts. Margaret chalks To infinity on the feed-store door as a joke about the feed bill, and you write And beyond underneath it in a hand that wobbles. The rain takes the chalk by March, but the ribbons stay on the ewes until shearing. When the flock is turned out onto the wet grass, you lean on the gate and count them. The small grey lamb is at the back, still slower than the rest, and its pink bow has gone soft and faded, yet it keeps pace at the gate all the same.
