Matching pinky promise hands on two upper arms

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people's upper arms are pressed together, each showing a small outline tattoo of two hands hooked by their little fingers in a pinky promise pose. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, and the designs sit at matching heights on each arm. The plain white tops and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoos.

Brother Aldo had kneaded the monastery bread for nineteen winters before he noticed the hole in the bakehouse wall was the same width as the scriptorium shutter behind it. On the far side, Brother Ferris copied psalms by a candle he was not supposed to light before matins. Neither of them was allowed to speak during the silence, so they found they could hook their little fingers through the gap and hold them there, and that was the whole of their conversation for a year.

One autumn the abbot sent Ferris down to the grange at Scarrow to copy the tithe books. Before he went, they hooked fingers through the stones and made a promise with no other words: whoever was taken first, the other would ring the dawn bell. Ferris walked down the valley with his satchel and his inkhorn. Aldo rang the bell that winter, and the next, and the rope wore a pale band at the height of his shoulder.

The abbot grew tired of hearing the bell rung by the same man every morning and asked why. Aldo said he had promised. The abbot asked to whom. Aldo showed him the hole in the wall, and the abbot, who had been a boy in that house once, put his own finger through and found nothing on the other side but cold air.

Ferris came back in the spring of the third year, grey at the temples, and found the rope still warm from the morning's ringing. He pushed his finger through the gap, and Aldo was already waiting on the other side.
