Matching puzzle piece tattoos on wrists
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a puzzle piece tattoo containing a pixelated heart. The left piece is drawn in an outline with a black pixel heart, while the right piece is filled solid black with a lighter pixel heart in negative space. The tattoos use only black and grey ink on smooth skin against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Tom, the jigsaw is still on the card table in the back room, where Mum left it. Eleven hundred pieces of the harbour at Whitby, and you took the sky with you when you went. I've been sorting what's left into edges and corners, the way she taught us, and I found the one piece that doesn't belong to any picture at all.

It was the summer before you left, when the shop was still open and we had nothing to do but cut cardboard. You drew a heart on squared paper, one block at a time, and I copied it onto the back of a spare piece with a biro so the grid wouldn't show. Then we argued about whose heart it was. Neither of us would say, so we cut two pieces instead, one with its edge curled like a shell and one flat and dark, and we put the hearts in the centre where you could only see them if you were looking.
I'm sending yours back. The postmark will be from Newcastle, I expect, if you're still there. Don't bother with the sky. I've already drawn one, and it's the wrong blue, but the heart fits where it always did.
