Matching puzzle piece wrist tattoos

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two interlocking puzzle piece tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two people holding hands. The left piece shows a dark red rose with green leaves, shaded to suggest soft petals. The right piece shows a teal clock face with gold detailing, a pink rose bud and green leaves. Both designs use bold outlines and solid colour, and they are framed close together against a black background.

Dear Tomasz, the rain has finally stopped, so I can hear the clock again. Your father's regulator has run slow since you left, and I have stopped fussing with it. Mrs Pargeter came round on Tuesday with a cutting of her dark red roses, the ones she calls Midnight Velvet, and asked whether I could mend the gilt face she broke in March. I told her the face was the easy part. The movement had gone dry, like everything else in this house.

I have been sorting your jigsaw in the back room. Eleven months since the Hull packet went down, and the table still holds the sky you never finished, a thousand blue pieces with no edges. Yesterday I found two that locked together without any persuasion, one with a red petal curled at its corner and one with the Roman numeral three. I sat there a long time holding them, deciding whether I was allowed to be pleased about something so small.

So I have cut two pieces from the oak lid of your father's case, the way he taught us, and painted one with the rose and the other with his clock face, teal as the harbour in August. They lock where the wood is worn smooth. I am posting the rose half with this letter. Keep the clock. When the next boat docks, fit yours against mine and tell me whether the join holds.

The clock on the wall has just struck four. For the first time in a year I did not count the strokes. I simply stood and listened, and let the time be whatever it was.
