Matching puzzle piece key tattoos on shoulders
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two people are photographed from behind, each with a puzzle piece tattoo on the upper shoulder blade. The piece on the left holds a swirling, ornamental design, while the piece on the right holds a decorative key with a heart-shaped bow. Both are drawn in black linework with light grey shading against plain, neutral skin and a pale wall.

You find the puzzle in the linen cupboard at Seacrest, under a stack of sheets that smell of salt and lavender, its box gone soft at the corners. Nell says it is a lighthouse, a thousand pieces, and that you will never finish it before the August lodgers leave. You try anyway, on the dining room table, while the rain rattles the bay windows and Mrs Garrow counts spoons in the scullery.

By the third wet day you have two pieces that will not sit with the rest. One is a curl of black iron, the scrolled end of a gate you pocketed from the lane. The other is a key with a heart worked into its bow, which Nell swears she found in the sand below the cliff path. Neither belongs to the lighthouse. Neither, Nell admits, has a tab on the right side where a neighbour should go.
On the last evening, when the lodgers have gone and the sky over the headland is the colour of a bruise, you both sit on the back step with the box between you. You turn the two pieces over and see that they were cut from the same sheet of card, that the swirl and the key fit edge to edge like a lock and its keeper. You hold them up to the light. Nell laughs and says the lighthouse was never the picture at all. You press the pieces together, and the lid, for once, closes without a fight.
