The ironmonger on Gilder Lane shut his shutters at nine, but Tamsin Roe left the back door on the latch for anyone carrying a key that would not turn. Her grandfather had painted that rule above the frame, and though the paint had flaked to nothing, nobody in the street had forgotten it.

One wet night a boy came to the door with a heart-shaped padlock in his fist and a face like he had run the whole way from the river. He said he had chained it to the railings of Marrow Bridge with his sister, and they had sworn one of them would keep the key. Then she went north on the night train and took the key with her, and he had spent a year learning that a bridge is a poor place to keep a promise. Tamsin looked at the lock for a long time before she reached for her files.

They walked under the sodium lamps with the lock swinging between them. The keyhole was full of grit and the copper had gone green at the hinge, so Tamsin oiled it, worked a hairpin around the wards, and filed the bit of an old skeleton key until its two round loops fitted her palm. It went in. It did not turn. She tried again, slower, and felt the tumblers lift one by one like people standing up in a crowded room.

The shackle sprang open. Inside the heart, folded small, was a note in the boy's own hand, dated the summer before. It said: keep the key, I will come back for the lock. The boy read it twice and laughed in a way that was nearly crying. He pushed the padlock back onto the railing, open, and left it there. Tamsin kept the key in her coat pocket all the way home, and it stayed warm the whole walk back.
