Matching puzzle piece and pixel heart wrist tattoos
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together, each with a small tattoo of a puzzle piece containing a pixelated heart. The left piece is an outline with a dark filled heart, while the right piece is solid black with the heart left as pale negative space. The design is simple and crisp, in black ink and grey tones against plain skin and a light background.

The jigsaw had been short one piece since the spring, and nobody in our kitchen would admit to losing it. Mum said Dad must have taken it with him to the allotment. Tom swore he had never once touched the table. I stopped asking and started checking the bin.

It was Tom who found it, at ten past five on a Sunday, wedged in the seam of the sofa cushion where Dad used to fall asleep with his boots still on. The piece was grey cardboard gone soft at the corners, and in the middle of it sat a heart made of tiny black squares, the sort Dad had doodled on the back of every electricity bill for thirty years. Tom held it up to the window. The streetlight came through the gaps between the squares.
"It won't fit," he said. "The picture's the wrong way round."
We tried it anyway, the two of us on the carpet with the lid off, until the light turned the colour of weak tea. Then I noticed the heart on the spare was pale on black, while the one in the box was dark on white, and the edge of the spare had a knob where the box had a notch. Dad had cut them both himself from one sheet, so each would only ever hold half of the other.
Tom pushed his wrist against mine, palm up, to see whether the lines met. They did. We sat there a long time without saying anything, while the milk float rattled past outside and the room slowly got its colours back.
