Matching quote tattoos on two forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms rest side by side on a black and white striped bedding, each carrying a single line of cursive script in black ink. The upper line reads For them I'll risk it all and the lower line reads Because of her I will not fall, with the lettering running diagonally along each arm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or colour, and the photo is taken at close range from above.

The Majestic on Harrow Street had a sprung floor that gave under your heels like a held breath, and Mrs Pemberton, who ran the Thursday dances, swore it was the only honest floor in Lancashire. Dot and I were sixteen the summer we first took it on, two sisters in borrowed frocks with our hair pinned flat, and the men in the back row bet a shilling on which of us would go over first.

The lift was Dot's idea. I would take her weight on my shoulders and hold her there, arms out, while the band hit the last chorus, and she would fall back into nothing and trust me to catch her wrists. We practised in the yard behind the chapel until the bricks wore pale on our palms. Father said we would break our necks. Dot said we would break the bank, and she was right, because by the autumn the promoter from the coast was paying us in full.
The night it went wrong, the boards were slick with spilt lemonade and somebody's wet mackintosh. I felt my heel go. For one long second I was certain I would drop her, and I thought of every promise I had made to Mother about being careful, and then I stopped thinking of them. I set my feet and held. She came down into my hands like a sparrow into a cupped palm, the whole hall roared, and Dot laughed so hard she could barely stand.
The spring after, we went to a parlour in Leeds and had the same copperplate inked along our forearms, her line and my line, so we would never forget which of us was holding whom. Dot has been in Canada these twenty years. When the floor tilts under me now, I look down at the words, and I stay upright.
