Deathly Hallows and script quotes on two feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the soles and heels of two bare feet, each with a black Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle and vertical line, above a line of cursive script. The left foot reads Mischief Managed and the right foot reads I solemnly swear, running along the arch toward the toes. The linework is clean and the ink is solid black with no colour, shown against a grey and white tiled floor.

Nell had the map folded inside her coat when the bell over the chandler's door went, and she knew from the sound it was her brother's boots and not her mother's. "Give it here," Tomas said, breathing hard from the harbour steps. "Gull Row's watching the quay and we've got till the tide turns."

The map was drawn on the back of an old tide table, three lines crossing a circle, with a triangle pressed through the middle where their grandfather had marked the three things he never sold: a brass compass with no needle, a glass float the colour of weak tea, and a key to the boathouse nobody had opened since the big storm. Beneath it, in Nell's careful hand, were the words they had sworn on at the breakwater, pinkies hooked, the wind taking half of Tomas's voice.
They went along the sea wall at low water, the cobbles slick with weed and the net loft cats watching from the rafters. The boathouse door gave on the third shove. Thin silver bars of light came up through the gaps in the planks. The key turned. Under a tarpaulin lay no treasure at all, only a rowing boat with their grandfather's name burned into the transom, and in its bow a tin box holding a single page in his handwriting: the three things were never meant to be found together, only carried, one in each pocket, until someone needed to stop being afraid of the sea.
Tomas read it twice and then laughed so hard he sat down in the bilge. "So we got soaked for nothing." Nell folded the tide table back into her coat and kept the float in her fist. "Not nothing," she said. "Mischief managed, Tomas. Now help me push this thing down the slip before the tide gets bored."
