Matching robot tattoos on two forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon robots are drawn in bold black outline, one wearing a red bow and holding a heart-shaped box, the other reaching toward a small red heart. Red hearts and bow details stand out against the black linework and light grey shading. The photo is framed close, showing both forearms and clasped hands against a pale bedspread.

The shop on Cutler Lane sold clocks that had stopped, and Harold Pim kept two tin robots on the back shelf to wind them when he forgot. Gertrude, the taller one, had a bow of red ribbon bolted to her square head, and she did not let anybody forget it. Teddy, who had a dented box for a chest and a single aerial, watched her across the workbench every evening for three winters without once managing a full sentence.

One wet Thursday the shop bell rang and Harold was out, so the robots answered it themselves. A courier had brought a parcel of spare gears addressed to nobody in particular. Teddy rolled forward on his squeaking treads, one arm extended, a small red enamel heart balanced between two fingers. He had been practising the gesture since October. Gertrude clicked her jaw, which was how she laughed, and took the heart from him as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world.
They walked the length of the counter that night, hands clasped, and knocked a tin of brass screws onto the floor with a noise like hail. Harold came down in his dressing gown and found them sitting side by side beneath the clock face, their lights blinking in no particular rhythm.
He never did fix the squeak in Teddy's left tread. He said it was a useful way of knowing where he was.
