Snoopy and Woodstock matching wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a cartoon tattoo: Woodstock holding a red heart balloon on the left and Snoopy holding a red heart on the right. The linework is thin and uniform in black, with the hearts filled in red. The pale background and palms of both hands keep the focus on the two matching designs.

Sit down, all of you, the soup will keep and so will I. You want the one about the beagle who wouldn't leave his kennel roof? Good. Then hush. Long before any of you were born, a beagle lay on top of a red kennel in a town with one bakery and one bus, and he wrote his novels on an old typewriter that clacked like hail on a tin shed. Beside him sat a small yellow bird called Woodstock, who could not write a single word, but who could carry a heart on a string from one end of the lane to the other without once letting it touch the ground.

That spring the beagle fell hopelessly in love with the baker's daughter, Mabel Orr, who sold him a currant bun every Tuesday and never asked his name. He cut a heart from red felt and sewed it with his own clumsy paws, then sat on the roof staring at the typewriter. Not one sentence would come. So Woodstock took the heart in his beak, tied it to a length of thread, and flew it over the rooftops to the bakery window, where Mabel found it bobbing against the glass at dawn, with a bun balanced on top like a cherry.
I have told this story at four weddings and two funerals, and every time someone asks me what the beagle wrote in the end. I tell them he never wrote a word to her at all. He simply held the heart out, and the bird did the flying, and the rest of the town ate their breakfast and pretended not to notice.
Now, Mabel, the bride, is waiting for her bun, and I have been talking for so long that my tea has gone the colour of the kennel roof. Lift your glasses. To the dog who asked, and the bird who carried it.
