Tin Man character on inner forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon Tin Man figure with a dented tin body, a heart cut into his chest and a red axe in one hand stands on the inner forearm near the wrist. Bold black outlines define the figure, and soft grey shading gives the metal a rounded, dimensional look. Small red accents appear on the axe head and a floating heart, with light dots and a curl of line set around the figure against plain skin.

Brother Anselm had been at the mill for three winters when the abbot finally let him build the tin man. It was meant to carry firewood up the long stair from the cellar, and to ring the vespers bell when the old sacristan's knees gave out. He beat the sheets from an old pewter chalice and a tinker's pot, riveted them over a frame of ash, and cut a heart from a scrap of copper and set it in the chest where a man keeps his own.

The figure had no heart of its own, the brothers said, so it went up and down the stair all day with the axe on its shoulder, splitting kindling for the infirmary. Nothing hurt it. Frost could not crack it and the bell rope could not wear it through. But on the feast of Saint Brendan a lay sister came up from the valley with a basket of eggs and a cough, and the tin man set down its axe and stood in the yard for an hour, watching the rain run off her shawl. Anselm noticed that its dented face had gone soft around the eyes.
When the sister had gone home, the tin man walked to the chapel and rang vespers without being asked. The bell rang true for the first time in years. Then it went to the well, filled the bucket, and poured it over its own head, very slowly, until the water ran out of the seams and down the wall like tears. In the morning the brothers found a small red heart floating in the trough, bright as a cherry, and the tin man gone from the yard, its axe left leaning against the mill door.
