Matching peanut butter and jam sandwich tattoos

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two small cartoon sandwiches sit side by side, one spread with peanut butter and one with jam, each with a smiling face and stick arms and legs. A small red heart sits beside each character, and the outlines are dark and simple. The colour is applied in soft tan and warm pink tones, and the two tattoos are placed close together to mirror each other.

On Thursday the picnic basket came down from the top cupboard. Pete had always assumed picnics were for other sandwiches, the cucumber and cress sort, but Bramble said a basket was a basket and they were going to see the sea. Nobody had told the sea. The lid was latched, the dog had been shut out, and for forty minutes they lay in the dark pressed together, trading jokes about crusts and whether a butter knife could ever be trusted.

When the lid lifted on the harbour wall, a herring gull was already waiting. Pete felt himself go soft at one corner. Bramble, who had never once in her life been afraid of anything with a beak, shoved the gull's head aside with her edge and held the line. The girl with the basket laughed, tore them neatly in half, and handed one of each to her little brother, who declared them the finest sandwiches he had ever eaten.

Pete decided that was sea enough for one day. Bramble, sticky and unrepentant, said it was the only kind worth going to.
