Black script lettering reading Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest, running up the inside of a forearm.

Black script quote along a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with a long handwritten-style quotation in black ink, set in four lines that run diagonally up the arm. The lettering uses a flowing script with decorative capitals on the C, the A and the I, and the lines are crisp and evenly weighted. The image is in black and grey, with a plain pale background and a cord bracelet visible at the wrist.

Dear Ines,

The water depot job is finished and I am writing with ink still under my nails, so forgive the blots. Master Oduya let me draw the capitals myself. The C of "Come" took three days on vellum before he would let it near the wall, and I redrew the A in "all" nine times until its swash curled back on itself the way the old hand-books show. Everyone on the Lower Ring says the letters look like they are leaning in to listen.

The wall is the north face of the depot, where the haulers queue from before the shift bells until after the lamps go out. Some walk in from the salt flats with their shoulders bent under the yokes, and they stop to read it while they wait, lips moving. A woman with a bad hip asked me yesterday whether the rest was real or only a promise somebody had painted on a wall. I told her the words belonged to a man who had carried more than any of us, and that was all I knew.

Last week a boy came with his older brother's pack straps cutting into his palms and sat on the step beneath the first line for an hour. He said nothing. When the bell rang he stood, pressed his hand flat against the lettering, and went in to fill his cans. The stone was still warm from the sun, and I found myself standing there longer than I needed to.

Write again soon and tell me whether the rain has reached the coast yet.

Love, Mirela
