A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down on the boards, the lot of you, and mind the gulls. You want the tale of the Marlowe sisters, and you shall have it, but keep your voices low, for the wire does not care for gossip. Ada was the elder and the bolder. Nell was the one who counted the steps. Every night in the summer of 1889 they went up the rigging at the end of the pier, one behind the other, with a length of tarred hemp slung between two poles above the black water.

The manager, Ezra Pell, wore a watch chain as thick as a bell rope and wanted them to cross without a net. Ada said yes before Nell could open her mouth. Nell said nothing at all, which was worse. She stood at the foot of the ladder with her hands buried in her apron, tying and retying the same knot.

On the last night the wind came in from the south-west and the wire began to sing. Halfway over, Ada felt the rope go slack beneath her. Ada called out, and her words carried across the water like a bell: for them I'd risk it all. Then Nell's voice came back, steady as a kettle, counting her sister's steps the way she had on the washing line as children: because of her, I will not fall. Ada took the last step on that single word.

They say the pair of them walked that pier together for forty years after, and that each had the other's promise inked small on her foot so neither would ever forget who held the rope. Some call it nonsense. Ask the gulls. They still circle that spot every evening, and not once have they settled on the wire.
