Two people with matching fine line script tattoos on their ribs, one reading you'll keep me wild and the other you'll keep me safe, in black ink.

Matching script quotes on two sets of ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-torso photographs show a matching pair of black script tattoos, each reading part of a phrase: you'll keep me wild on the left and you'll keep me safe on the right. The lettering is thin, even and slightly looped, with a little shading at the strokes. The skin tone is pale and the lighting is soft, with both shirts lifted to show the ribs and the words sit in a horizontal line across each side.

Snow had closed the Pass Road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the Hollin Inn held eleven guests, a goat that had learnt to open the larder, and two sisters who had not agreed on a single thing since the funeral. Marian kept the books at the long oak table. Nell kept the fire and the key to the back stair, and she had been refusing to give the key up for three days.

"You'll wake the Carvers with that hammering," Marian said, not looking up.

"They're awake. They've been awake since the avalanche bell." Nell hung a lantern on the hook by the door and stood with her wet boots steaming. "Mr Ostrander says the attic is groaning. He wants the door unlocked so he can see the beams."

Marian pushed the ledger aside. In the margin of the last page, in their mother's looping hand, were the two lines they had copied out as girls and pinned above the range: you'll keep me wild, you'll keep me safe. Nobody had ever said which of them had written which. Nell had always assumed it was Marian who needed keeping safe.

Then the attic creaked, the goat bleated, and the lamps guttered as the wind found the chimney. Nell looked at the stair, then at her sister, and for the first time since the funeral she laughed. Marian was already reaching for the coil of rope behind the door. "Fine," she said. "You go up first. I'll hold the end."
