Two bare feet are shown side by side in black and white, with the ankles crossing diagonally across the frame. Each foot carries a fine line script phrase, one reading you keep me safe and the other you keep me wild, with rows of dots and dashes in Morse style beneath each phrase. The black ink is crisp against the pale skin, and the lettering is the clear focus of the composition.

The big top came down on a Tuesday, and by Thursday the field behind Saltmarsh Farm held nothing but ruts, a bent lamp post and the two of you. Thea has given up on the wire. The rigging crew sold the cable for scrap, so there is no high line left for her to walk, and you sit on an upturned crate with your bare feet on the cold step of the caravan, listening to the generator cough itself quiet.

Morse is how you talk now that the band has gone home and the ringmaster has stopped shouting. Years ago, when the crowd was too loud to hear a whistle, you learned to send messages by tapping the guy-rope pegs. Now she taps on your ankle with one finger while the kettle ticks. Dot, dot, dash. You keep me safe. You read it off her skin before you let yourself think about the letters.

Her answer comes back in a longer run, and you know the rhythm before you decode it. You keep me wild. It was a joke you used to share for the crowds, the way she would wink at the knife-thrower's boy before she dropped into the net. Tonight it sounds more like a dare, or a warning.

The lorry is due at six to take the last of the poles to a yard in Norfolk. You are both awake when it comes, sitting in the dark cab with the heater ticking. She reaches down without a word and taps one last time against the bone above your ankle, slow and deliberate, the way you would tap a sleeping animal to wake it. Dot, dash, dot. You do not need to decode it. You lean into her shoulder and let the engine take you both out through the gate.
