Two women stand back to back, each showing a small black script tattoo on the upper back shoulder. The left tattoo reads "One in the same" and the right reads "two of a kind", both in thin, even linework with no shading. The plain pale wall behind them keeps the focus on the ink.

Your father fitted the cabin doors himself and never once let either of you touch the varnish. He said a boat knows whose hands are on her. The winter he died, the two of you sat in the cuddy with a tin of tea gone cold and argued about who would take the lease at Rickmansworth. Ada wanted the dry berth. You wanted it because the gates there groan like something alive, and you liked the sound of being needed.
In the end the surveyor from the marina asked to see the papers. He looked from one of you to the other and said, surely one of you must be the elder. Ada pointed at you without looking up from the ledger. 'She is,' she said, 'by eleven minutes, and I'm the one who remembers.' You laughed until the surveyor left looking embarrassed.
That evening you drop the last paddle together and the water roars up the chamber, and the boat lifts slow as a held breath. Ada's hand finds yours on the beam. Two sets of shoulders, one set of oars, the same stubborn river.
