Years later you both had it inked at the nape, the same looping S, because the man in the back room on Western Road had a cold coffee and an hour free and nothing better to do.

The best man comes in waving the speech cards, and your sister catches your eye over his shoulder and mouths something you can't read. You go to her. In the cloakroom she gathers her hair in one hand and turns her back to you without being asked. The word is a little softer at the edges now, like pencil that has been rubbed with a thumb. "Still there," she says. "Still there," you say. She asks if you will give the speech. You tell her you would rather hold her train.

You fasten the last pin, and she turns around, and for a moment you are both nineteen in the back of that car, arguing over who gets the window.
