Matching love heart tattoos on two backs

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two women stand back to back, showing matching tattoos on their upper backs, each a black script word love set inside an infinity-style heart outline. The lettering and heart are drawn in fine, even black lines with little shading, and the skin tones and patterned tops are the only other colours. The tattoos sit centrally in each frame, with the heads cropped out and the image has a slightly vintage, filtered look.

Nell had the ticket hut at the far end of the field, where the generator coughed and the Ferris wheel turned slow against the drizzle. Bea was late for the second house again, shouting across the mud that someone had nicked the key to the dodgems. Nell didn't look up. She was stacking pennies into paper rolls the way their father had taught them, thumb pressing each edge flat, and the coins stayed warm in her palm long after the till was shut.

Last autumn, Mr Ambrose from the Cosmic Carousel had told them that if they were going to be sisters on his payroll, they could at least be sisters on paper too. So they went to a parlour above a chip shop in Hull, where a man with reading glasses on a cord drew a looping heart on tracing paper, pulled its sides into a figure of eight, and wrote the word inside in a leaning hand. Bea wanted hers high on the shoulder where a sleeve would hide it. Nell chose the same spot without asking. They walked out with the stencil drying and the needle's sting still humming, laughing about the chips.

The fair folded early that year, after the wet August and the unpaid electric bill. Bea took a place with a side show in Scarborough and the sleeper train north. Nell stayed behind with the booth, the cash tin and the rolls of pennies that never quite balanced. Letters arrived on the backs of handbills, each one ending in a crooked loop that she traced with her finger before reading the rest.

On the last night of the season Nell pulled the shutter down and walked the empty midway with the cash bag under her arm. Tucked inside the tin was a photograph with no note: two backs side by side in a caravan doorway, the two hearts turned towards the same lamp. Nell slipped it into her coat, locked the hut, and for the first time all year she did not count anything.
