Matching sea turtle tattoos on two shoulders

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two women stand side by side, seen from behind, with a beach, grass and sea behind them. Each has a small solid black sea turtle tattoo with simple outlined shapes, the left one sitting on the upper back and the right one on the shoulder. The image is a plain outdoor photograph with soft daylight and the tattoos are shown in black ink on sun-lit skin.

Our grandfather swore a sea turtle always comes back to the beach it hatched on, even if it has to cross half the Atlantic to find the sand again. My sister Nell took this as a dare rather than a fact. She was nineteen that August and had already decided we were leaving Happisburgh for good, so she marched me up the steps above the chip shop in Cromer and asked for matching turtles before the six o'clock bus.

The man with the biro drew three turtles on tracing paper and let us choose. Nell wanted the one with its head turned back, as if checking on the shore. I wanted the plain one that looked like it was already swimming away. He laughed and said they were the same creature facing different ways. The needle stung less than I expected. Nell held my hand anyway, and we both pretended not to notice the bus pulling away without her.

She went to Leeds that autumn and I stayed, pulling pints in the café by the lifeboat house. Every July she sends a photograph of her shoulder against some new sea, a harbour in Portugal, a grey pier in Wales, and every year I take a picture of mine against the same stretch of sand where we used to dig for crabs.

When the tide is far out I walk to the edge of the flats and wait, the way Grandad said to. I have never once seen a turtle here. I just keep my small black shape turned towards the water and count the waves until Nell comes home.
