Matching sun and eclipse tattoos on upper backs
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, seen from behind, each with a sun and crescent moon design on the upper back. The sun has fine, wavy rays around a shaded crescent, and the linework is accompanied by stippled dotwork shading in the background. The tattoos are black and grey against the skin, and the setting is a street at dusk.

The smoked glass had cracked across one corner by the time Nell reached the stile, so she held it with her thumb over the split and waited for Bet to stop laughing at her. They had bought the pair from the chemist in Penrith for the morning the moon was due to eat the sun, and Bet had insisted on carrying the spare in her coat pocket like a lucky coin.

The train to Carlisle left at eight, and Bet was on it, bound for a job in Glasgow that paid better than anything the valley had ever offered. Nell had walked her as far as the bridge over the Eden and then turned back, because someone had to mind the lambing shed and their mother's hip. They agreed on the fell top above Sowerby Gill. Nine forty, the leaflet said. Clear sky, if they were lucky.
They were lucky. At nine thirty the light went thin and silver over the dry-stone walls, and the sheep stopped cropping and stood looking at the sky like they had been told off. Nell lifted the cracked glass and saw the sun with a bite out of it, a black disc sliding slowly across the gold. Somewhere far down the dale, in a train window, Bet would be doing the same thing with her spare.
When the moon sat dead centre, a ring of fire blazed around its edge, thin and bright as wire. Nell lowered the glass and found her own hands were shaking. Bet had said the eclipse would make them both see the same thing at once, which was nonsense, of course, but she checked her phone anyway. Eleven missed texts, all from Bet, all saying the same thing: I can see it. Are you looking?
