Matching knot tattoos on two backs

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side seen from behind, each with an identical black interlaced knot tattoo centred on the upper back. The linework is thin and even, with the knot's loops crossing over each other and no shading. The ink is black on skin in bright daylight, with a garden and fence in the blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been coming down since Tuesday, and by Thursday the lane to Coldharbour was buried to the height of the stable door. Nobody was leaving, so I let the two women from Carlisle take the back kitchen, and that was where they found the cord. It hung from the beam over the range, a length of tarred twine knotted into a shape nobody could follow with a finger. One of them traced a loop with her fingertip and said it went round and round without ever stopping.

That was Gran's knot, I told her. She tied one loop into it for every guest the snow had ever kept under our roof, from carters to a vicar who sang all night. You can't find the start of it, she used to say, so you can't cut it, and you mustn't try. I had never once wanted to try. The two women looked at each other the way people do when they have decided something without speaking.

They asked for a loop of their own. I gave them a clean length of twine and a pair of scissors for the ends, and they knelt on the flagstones tying their knots with their heads close together, passing the cord back and forth and laughing at how it kept knotting itself. When they had finished they hung it on the beam beside Gran's, and I saw that their new loops had gone over and under the old ones so cleanly that I could not tell where one piece stopped.

The plough came through at nine the next morning. They paid for the room with a fiver and a promise to write, and walked out to the car with their collars up. I stood in the empty kitchen a long while, looking up at the beam. The cord hung there, one unbroken line that nobody had cut, and the snow outside had already begun to soften at the edges, as if it had never meant to stay.
