Outline animal tattoos on an upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A woman flexes her arm towards the camera, showing two small black outline animal tattoos, one on the upper arm and one lower down near the elbow. A separate tattoo of a coloured feather with a red flower sits on the upper arm beside the first outline. The background is dark and the lighting is soft, with another person's striped top visible at the right edge.

Come closer, the gulls are loud tonight, so you'll have to lean in. Down at Porth Hallow there was a fishwife's cat called Morwen who had a tail curled up like a question mark, and she never once in nine years let anyone forget it. Every morning she sat on the harbour wall and waited for the boats, and every morning the boats came in low with their nets full, and she took her share from the bottom of the crates with a patience the fishermen said was half wicked.

One February her tail snagged on a cleat when the Gull Mary came alongside, and she went sliding off the wall with a yowl. Ambrose, a grey tom who had once stolen a whole kipper from under the Vicar's nose, came down the slipway to fish her out. He held her by the scruff while the tide slopped round his boots, and she swore at him all the way up the steps, which he took as a kind of thanks.

After that they were never apart. They went up the hill together to the chapel roof and came down again with feathers stuck to their whiskers from gulls they had not quite caught. Old Dilys at the chandlery swore she had seen them dance on the quay in the rain, which nobody believed, though nobody had ever caught her in a lie about cats.

So when the boats came in that spring, the fishermen stopped counting the crates. At dusk you could find the pair of them on the wall, their two question marks pressed together in the last of the light, and the men would nod and say that the harbour had a fair share of luck to spare, and that a sensible man never went short of it.
