You find the seed packet in the drawer of your mother's potting bench, her handwriting gone soft at the edges, and you know before you read it that Maud has been planting the back border without you again. The runner beans are already climbing the wire. Your sister has never once waited for the frost to lift.

The two of you have not spoken since the funeral, which is a daft way to measure eleven weeks, but the garden does not care about grudges. Snails have eaten the young lettuces down to their ribs. You kneel on the damp path with a trowel and think about the summer you were nine and she was twelve, when you buried a jam jar of worms under the apple tree so the ground would have something to remember you by. Maud dug them up in October and sold them back to you for a penny.

By noon the sun has come over the wall, and you hear the gate latch behind you. She does not say sorry. She hands you a bruised tomato she has been carrying in her coat pocket, and you bite into it right there, juice running down your wrist, and she laughs the way she used to before everything got complicated. You sit on the upturned crate together, shoulder to shoulder, knees touching the seed trays.

The packet is still in your pocket with your mother's name written across it, and you tip a little of the seed into Maud's palm. Round and round the two of you go, the way the beans wind up the wire, never quite reaching the top and never needing to.
