Matching skull tattoos on two shoulders
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
Two people are photographed from behind, each with a skull tattoo on the upper back or shoulder. The left skull is topped with a pink bow and has pink accents, while the right skull has blue accents. Both use grey shading and bold black outlines, giving a cartoon-like neo-traditional look against bare skin.

Old Maud kept the bell-garden at the top of Harrow Lane, and every spring she planted two beds of foxgloves that were never supposed to meet. Her twin grandsons, Edwin and Tam, were each given a bed and told to keep their hands out of the other's. They did not, of course. By midsummer the bindweed had crept under the hedge and the two beds had become one tangle of blue and pink.

The trouble came the autumn the vicarage's skull-faced clock went missing from the hall. Nobody could say who had taken it, only that a pale grinning thing had been seen on the wall at dusk, hung with a ribbon of pink silk that had come off a girl's hair. Tam swore it was Edwin's doing. Edwin swore it was the hedge. Maud said nothing. She went to the shed and came back with two tin skulls she had hammered out years before, one with a pink bow fixed to its crown, one painted with blue stars for luck.
She hung them on the gatepost. "Whichever of you wants the other's bed," she said, "you'll have to carry it on your own back."
Tam laughed, then didn't. In the morning the clock sat on the step with dew on its face, and the bindweed had been pulled clean from both beds in one long strip, roots and all. Maud never asked who did it. The skulls still hang on the gate, and the foxgloves grow together now without anyone minding.
