A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm hands you the box on the third day of the thaw, when the lane to the abbey is still mud to the hubs. Inside lies the key to the almonry chest, cut so long ago that its bow has worn smooth as river stone. Heart-shaped, with a stem of curling ornament, it has not turned in its lock since the winter the east roof fell in. You are told to find its fellow, or make one.

The fellow is not in the village, nor the orchard. It sits in the old scriptorium cupboard behind a stack of psalters, a flat iron plate with a scrolled border and a single notch filed into one edge. Anselm says a steward sawed the two halves apart forty years ago, meaning to keep one for himself. You fit the plate to the key's shank, and the scrolls run on from one to the other like water finding its level.

It takes eleven days. You file the notch, oil the wards, and listen at night for the bell the wind sometimes stops. On the twelfth morning the almonry chest opens without a shriek. There are no coins inside, only a bundle of letters tied with linen, written by two lay sisters who swapped their gate duties every Lent for decades so that neither would be alone at the bell.

You read them by the window until the light goes. Then you lock the chest, hang the key on its nail beside the plate, and leave them there, two halves that were never meant to sit apart.
