Matching small star tattoos on two wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small, solid black five-pointed stars sit on the inner wrists of two arms placed side by side. The stars are filled in with uniform black ink and have crisp, simple outlines, with no shading or added detail. The photograph has a warm, natural tone with no colour ink, and the skin around the tattoos is plain.

The hatch to Lower Ring Nine has been sealed since the second dimming, so you pass the message the old way, tapping it into the hull plating with a knuckle. Three taps, a pause, then two. Mira's answer comes back through the cold water pipe, a dull knock you feel in your teeth before you hear it. She is still awake. Of course she is.

When the Verity left the dock, the navigators were each given a single star to keep. You were eleven and Mira was eleven, and Oswin from the galley burnt a cork in a saucer, dipped a sterilised needle in the soot and marked you both by lamplight. He swore it would wash off if your sums ever went wrong. Forty years later it has not washed off, and neither has the habit of checking one chart against the other every watch.

The drift started small, a fraction of a degree a day, and then the main reckoning began to lie. Nobody on the bridge would believe the stations were off. So you lay the two marked spots of your own hands against the same cold pipe, one above the other, and wait for the ship to tell you where it is. Mira does the same on her side of the bulkhead. The metal carries the faint hum of both of you, and the numbers in your head start to settle.

At the thirtieth hour the two stars swing into the same line on the viewport. You are off by one degree, not nine. Below you, Mira is chalking the correction on the wall of Ring Nine, and for the first time in weeks the sky agrees with both of you.
