Two people's inner wrists show matching fine line black tattoos of a heart with a curled swirl beside crescent arcs.

Matching heart and crescent wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a small matching tattoo of crescent-like arcs above a heart with a curled spiral at its base. The linework is thin, even and black, with no shading or colour. The pale skin and light green background keep the focus on the two small designs.

The moon was a paring over the multistorey when Maggie and I finally came off the Eastwood Ward at half six, and neither of us mentioned the bed at the end of the corridor. We never did. We walked the long way past the chapel, where the lights stayed on all night for anyone who wanted them.

We had started a habit ten years ago, back when we were both still learning how to sleep in daylight. A biro mark on the inside of the wrist: a crescent like a fingernail, a heart leaning against it, and a curl at the bottom like a lock of hair. It meant I'm still here. Nobody on the wards knew what it was, which was the point. Sister Okafor once asked if it was the trust's new hand-hygiene code, and we let her believe it.

That morning Maggie held her wrist out under the lamp by the bus shelter. The ink had worn faint along the spiral. I pressed my thumb to it, then took the pen from my pocket and went over every line slowly, the way you'd retrace a route you know by heart. "Again," she said. "Again, so it lasts until Thursday." The bus came round the corner with its interior lit like an aquarium, and we climbed aboard holding our hands out in front of us to dry in the cold, two small marks of the same night.
