Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two small sun motifs, each with a ring at the centre, a ring of short spikes and a short line of dots beneath, sit on two forearms. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is a muted purple. The pair is placed close together in the frame, with the wrists and knit sleeve at the bottom edge.

The castle at Harrowmere had no roof left by the time Mab Carrow came up the track with a sack of salt and a dog that would not stay behind her. The walls stood grey as old bread and the lord's hall lay open to the sky. Nobody went there. The village said a king had once caged the sun in that keep, and that the sun had broken free and taken the road down into the valley, and that its daughter had gone after it.

Her sister Ilse had climbed the same stair the winter before and not come down. Mab found her in the chapel, sitting on the rim of the dry font with her sleeves pushed back. On each forearm was a small sun with a ring at its heart and a crown of short spikes, and beneath each one ran a line of dots like sparks struck off a flint. "It is only the light," Ilse said. "It wants to go home, and so do I." Mab poured salt along the chapel floor, one grain at a time, the way their grandmother had marked a path for the dead.

The dots were steps. Mab counted them aloud as they went, seven down the lane, nine past the mill, and at each one the dog sniffed and the sisters' wrists grew warmer. At the foot of the hill the dots ran out. The sun on Ilse's arm was pale, and so was the one on Mab's, and then, as the bells of the drowned chapel began to ring under the water, both of them brightened at once and lifted free of the skin.

They climbed away into the morning, two small suns the size of coins. The keeper came down from the castle that noon asking for the light back. Mab only pushed up her sleeve and showed him the dots, a short line running down toward the wrist, and pointed to the road.
