Three outline stars on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three five-pointed star outlines of different sizes sit across the inner forearm, a small teal star above and a larger purple star to the right of a smaller pink one. The linework is thin and uniform, with the stars left unshaded and their centres showing bare skin. The colours are soft and slightly faded, and the photo is taken straight on against a pale fabric background.

Dear Maud, the boat came in at four with no lamp lit, and I knew before Father said a word. He has gone quiet in the way he does when the sea has taken something he liked. I am writing this at the kitchen table with the three pencils you left behind, the blue one worn to a stub, the red one sharpened by my teeth, and the purple one that smells of your pocket. I drew stars on the back of the tide tables while I waited, the way you taught me. Five points, no shading, just the outline, so the paper shows through the middle where the light would be.

You always said a star was only an edge and a bit of nothing inside, and I thought that was the sort of thing clever people said until I saw the chart Father brought up from the harbour office. The Dorothy had gone down past the Skerry Rocks on the ebb, and the crew had lined up their last sightings by the Pole Star, which I had always thought was a mean old thing for sailors, too far off to be any use. Mr Peel says it is the only one that stays put. He says a man can steer by it all night if he knows where to look.
So I have been looking. Tonight I climbed the gallery with the spyglass and found the blue one first, low over the water, then the red, then the big purple one that Father swears is the Plough turned on its side. None of them are the one I want. I drew them anyway, one above the other, and pinned the paper to the lamp housing so the light goes through the empty middles.
Father is asleep now. I have written your name on the back in tiny letters so the sea cannot read it. Come home before the autumn gales. The lamp is trimmed and I am learning the tides.
