Outlined star on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small five-pointed star is drawn as a single black outline on pale skin, with the star's interior left unshaded. The linework is thin and even, and the star sits off-centre on the left of the frame. The photo is a close, slightly soft shot of the inner wrist, with a plain background and no other marks visible.

Mind the puddle, it's deeper than it looks, and you'll want to be standing under the awning when I get to the good part. Rain on the stalls like this, the whole square smells of wet cabbage and hot tin, and that's the very weather for the tale of Mabry Coyle and the star she couldn't finish.

Mabry sold pins and buttons on the far corner by the fishmonger, and every morning she drew one star in the damp on her table before the market opened. Just the edge of it, five points, no fill. Her mother had told her a star was only a promise of light, and you didn't colour in a promise until it was kept. So the stars stayed hollow. Children would stop, trace the lines with a wet finger, and walk off satisfied.

One wet Thursday a stranger came under her awning with a face like unbaked bread and asked for the one thing she did not sell. He wanted the inside of the star. Mabry laughed and said the rain would wash it out by noon. He said that was the trouble with all good things, they wash out, and he paid her with a coin that had a hole through its middle, which is how she knew he was not from the town at all.

She never saw him again. But the next morning the star on her table had filled itself with a pale light, the way puddles take the sky, and every child who traced it came away with their pockets warm. Mind that step on the way out. The light's still there if you look down, and it's better than anything I could sell you.
