Small star cluster on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and clenched hand are shown against a yellow textured background. Five small black star outlines sit on the inner wrist, with one slightly larger star and four smaller ones arranged in a loose diagonal cluster. The linework is thin and even, the stars are mostly unshaded, and the ink is a dark grey-black on pale skin.

The year the frost came early, the stars went out one by one over the mill pond, and the bread would not rise. Dough sat grey and slack in its tins. The apprentice, a boy called Piers who had come up from the coast with a cough, wanted to give up and sleep. Maud gave him a sack of flour and told him to knead until his arms ached, because a loaf takes the shape of whoever worked it.
On the third morning a small cluster hung low above the chimney, one star bigger than the rest and four smaller ones set slantwise beside it, as if they had been dropped and not yet settled. Maud took a stub of charcoal from the firebox and drew the same pattern on the flour-dusted board, then pressed a round of dough down over it so the marks came up in the crust. Piers laughed at her. She did not mind.
The loaves came out gold at the edges, and the frost lifted off the mill pond before the carts arrived. Maud drew the cluster on the board every morning after that, and the village never once asked her why.
