Matching sorella script on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown close together, each carrying the word sorella in a thin, joined black script. The linework is fine and even, with a small flourish on the leading letter and no shading. The ink is black on light skin, and the framing is tight, with the two tattoos placed at similar heights on each arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The barge Mabel Rose lay tied at Hanwell lock with her engine ticking as it cooled, and it was you who had to walk the towpath for the spare windlass, because Nell would not leave the tiller. She had her hair knotted under a red scarf and the stubborn set to her jaw that she had worn since March. "Go on, sorella," she said, which is what she called you whenever she wanted something carried.

The spare windlass was not in the tool locker. It was in the cabin, wedged behind the tins of pilchards, and beneath it lay an envelope in your mother's careful hand with both your names on the front. You had not expected her to leave anything for the two of you to fight over. You turned it over twice before you opened it, the way you would test a lock gate before putting your weight on it.

Inside was one folded sheet. It said only that the boat was half hers and half yours, that neither of you could sell it while the other was still angry, and that the lock keeper at Hanwell owed her a tin of shortbread. Under that, in pencil, she had written: teach each other the locks again. You read it out loud on the lock beam, your voice cracking on the last line, and when you looked up Nell was standing on the gunwale with the windlass in her fist, her eyes wet and furious.

"I read it first," she said. "Last week. I put it back so you'd find it yourself."

You climbed down into the lock and the gates groaned open in front of you, slow and brown and full of light. Nell held out her hand for the windlass, and you gave it to her, and she gave you back the tiller.
