Matching sisters heart tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms each carry a heart outline filled with ornate swirls and the word Sisters written in script across the centre. The linework is fine and mostly dark, with the hearts appearing near-identical in design. A small pink bow sits lower on one arm, adding the only obvious colour against the dark ink and skin tones.

Nobody in Holm Cottage could agree on which of the Pryce girls started the trouble, but everyone agreed the trouble had a shape, and the shape was a heart. Rhoda, the eldest, wanted hers on the inside of her wrist where a nurse would see it. Gwen wanted hers higher, where she could check it at the sink. They fought about it for a fortnight across the bread bin, until the man who set up his chair behind the chip shop on Market Street drew one heart on a paper napkin and said, 'You'll both get the same, or neither of you gets anything.'

He worked the swirls the way his grandfather had worked iron gates, curls that ran in and out like a conversation nobody wanted to finish. Then he lettered SISTERS through the middle in a script that leaned slightly, as if it were listening for the back door. Gwen cried and blamed the needle. Rhoda held her other hand and counted to forty under her breath, the way she used to on the stairs when they were small and the lights had gone.

Years later, Gwen's daughter painted a pink bow low on her mother's arm for a school pageant, and the stuff would not wash off in the sink, no matter how hard the girl scrubbed. Rhoda laughed until she had to sit down on the step. 'Leave it,' she said. 'Somebody in this family ought to look like they had a good idea.'

Last spring they drove the old Vauxhall to the coast with the windows down, two hearts catching the sun on the same bumpy road. When the sea finally showed at the end of the lane, Rhoda said Gwen was a step behind again. Gwen said she had always been behind, and that was how they knew where the other one was.
