Matching sprout tattoos on both ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are shown from the side, each with a small black tattoo of a sprout with two leaves on the ankle. The linework is thin and solid, with little or no shading, and the two designs appear nearly identical. The ink is black against pale skin, and the tattoos sit small in the frame with the feet filling most of the image.

Hollis made his last round of the propagation benches at ten to three, the torch clipped to his coat so both hands stayed free for the watering can. The glasshouse ticked as the heating cooled. Along the north wall, in two identical pots of grit and peat, sat the pair of seedlings Ruth had rooted from a single cutting in March, before she moved to Carlisle and left them with a note that said only, Keep them apart.

He had kept them apart for months. One stood at the south end, where the sun came through the cracked pane at noon, and the other sat by the boiler pipe where the air stayed warm and thin. Each morning he measured the first true leaves against a pencil line he had drawn on the bench edge, and each morning the two lines matched, though he could not have said why that mattered to him more than the rest of the work.
In January the boiler failed. By dawn the frost had reached the far benches, and Hollis carried the boiler-side pot down the aisle with both hands under it, the soil spilling a little on his boots. When he came back for the second pot, he found the first had already leaned out of its place, its stem bent toward the empty gap where its twin had been, roots pushing through the drainage holes as if searching the bench for a way across.
He did not sleep that night. He tied a length of green twine between two bamboo canes, one pressed into each pot, and drew it slack so the seedlings could lean but not fall. In the morning he took the pencil to the bench edge and marked both lines again, side by side, the same height.
