Paper plane tattoos on the tops of two feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit on the tops of the feet, each showing a paper plane outline with a dotted line that loops upwards into a heart shape. The linework is thin and dark grey to black, with simple unshaded outlines and no fill. The feet rest on a wooden floor, with coloured nail polish on the toes, and the tattoos are the only ink in the composition.

Dilys had been folding the order slips into planes since the oven went on at four, because the cold made her hands want something to do. The bakery on Hollin Street smelled of scorched sugar and yeast, and the shopfront was still black. Across the road the night bus shelter stood empty except for Frank, who drove the late cabs and always caught the planes she sent out the door.

Her sister Nell had taught her the fold years back, on a kitchen table in Bolton, when they were too small to be trusted with knives. Nell was in Canada now, five hours behind on the clock, and their letters had dwindled to birthdays. Dilys drew the flight paths in pencil on the backs of the slips: a dotted line that curled up and round into a heart before it dropped towards whoever was meant to catch it.
At ten to five she loaded the last tray of bloomers, then folded one more plane from a spoiled docket and wrote on its wing: Still flying. She walked it out into the cold, let it go over the tram tracks, and watched it skid under the streetlight towards the cab rank. Frank's hand came up through the glass.
Two hours later a reply landed on the bakery step, folded tight and creased with a thumbprint of flour. It said only: Me too. Dilys tucked it into her apron pocket and went back to the ovens, where the first grey light was starting to show through the glass.
