Treble and bass clef tattoos on two ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on a dark blue blanket, one showing a black treble clef and the other a black bass clef on the ankle area. The linework is simple and solid, with the ink in black only and no shading visible. A thin wire anklet with a small star charm sits on the left ankle, and the close framing keeps both tattoos clear.

The harmonium in St Brenda's had lost its middle C to damp, and by the time the Oban boat landed Tomas Reid on Sgeir Dubh, nobody else on the island could find the note. You could. You had grown up counting hymns beside that wheezing box, and so the minister handed you the pump-handle and the job of waking it before Sunday.

Tomas had come to catalogue the old foghorn logs, and he spent his evenings on the stool beside you, feet braced on the pedals, reading bass figures from a notebook he had carried through two winters. He took the low lines with his left hand and you took the high, and the chapel, cold and mute for years, began to answer back. Through October the gales came in off the Atlantic and the boat stopped running, so the three of you ate tinned peaches in the vestry while the wind leaned on the door and rattled the hinges in time.

On the calmest morning of November Tomas packed his notebook and went down to the slip without saying goodbye, because he was never good at goodbyes. The boat had already pulled away when you found the last page wedged in the pump-handle cupboard. Beside a treble clef he had drawn a bass clef, and under them, in pencil: keep the middle one for me.

On Sunday you played the psalm with both hands, the bass low and steady beneath the treble, and when the chord reached the place where the middle C should have been, the wind off the sea came through the cracked pipe and filled it.
