Two black cats on a lower leg

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two cat silhouettes with arched tails sit side by side on the lower leg, one slightly above the other and angled in opposite directions. The cats are filled in solid black with a bluish tint, with no visible linework or shading inside the shapes. The background shows a white sock, a hand touching the ankle, a wooden surface and a patterned rug, all in soft, low-contrast tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer, the lamp is low and I will not waste oil on a tale you have heard from your mother a hundred times. Not that one. Tonight you get the story of the two black cats of Haddow Lock, who walked the dry canal every night after the water stopped coming.

Their names were Pell and Morrow, sleek and ink-dark, with tails that rose in a hook at the tip. They never once faced each other. One sat on the upper coping and the other on the lower, angled off in opposite directions, as cats do when they have agreed to disagree. The lock-keeper's girl, Ines, fed them salt fish from a tin and asked them questions, and they answered with their tails.

The year the pumps seized, the men of the upper town wanted the sluice shut so the lower streets would drown and the upper town would keep its wells. They came with iron bars and a lantern to work the gate wheel. Ines stood in their way. Pell jumped onto the wheel and sat there, unmoved. Morrow dropped down beside her, and the men, who would sooner kick a dog than a cat, stopped where they stood. In the quiet, Ines heard water seeping through a crack under the gate, the very crack the cats had been watching all summer.

They patched it with wet clay and their own stubbornness, and by morning the canal stood full again. Ines swore the cats were still there at dawn, one high on the beam and one low, pointing away from each other toward the two towns, as if keeping watch on both. Mind your lamp on the way home. Some nights, if you look, you will see them.
