Matching stick figure tattoos on two stomachs
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two bare midriffs sit side by side, each carrying an identical small stick figure with arms raised and a blue top bearing a red heart. The linework is thin and black, with flat blue and red fill inside the figures. The left tattoo sits near the hip above the waistband, and the right one sits lower on the abdomen above a belt.

The snow had buried the lane to Hollin Bank by four o'clock, and by six the generator had coughed itself quiet. Nell Ashdown lit the last three candles in the coffee room and counted her guests the way her father used to count sheep: two couples from Leeds, a walker called Ruth who had stopped talking about her knees, and the Pryce brothers, who had come up the fell road on foot with one rucksack between them and no explanation.

Bored, the younger brother, Owen, pulled a biro from behind the bar and drew on a paper placemat. A small figure with a round head, two stick legs and arms flung up as if it had just won something. He gave it a blue vest and coloured the chest with a red heart, pressed so hard the nib split the paper. Dafydd took the pen, drew the same figure beside it, then a third, smaller one, holding its hand. Ruth leaned over her tea and said it was the most honest drawing she had seen all winter.
Nell found the placemats later, stacked on the pass for the morning. Underneath the figures, in careful capitals, someone had written: WE WALKED THE WHOLE WAY. Nell read it twice and thought of the road, the drifts up to the gates, two men carrying a child's sled of medicine through the dark because the chemist in Settle had been the only one still open.
The lane cleared at dawn. The brothers were gone before she could find the bill book, and the rucksack was gone with them. In her apron pocket Nell found the placemat folded small, with a note tucked under the corner: Keep the blue one. We'll need a room next winter. She pinned it above the till, where the lamp caught the red heart and made it look wet.
