Matching stick figure tattoos on upper backs

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people's upper backs are shown, each with an identical small tattoo of a simple stick figure in a dress, holding a thin line that extends to the side. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the figures are drawn in outline only. The ink is black and the tattoos sit near the shoulder blades, with the image cropped above the heads.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind had been wrong for three days, too far out to lift anything, but on Thursday it swung round to the north-east and Saltcombe harbour smelled of tar and rain. Ada held the reel against her hip while Nell ran the length of the cobb with the paper kite bucking behind her, a red diamond cut from an old tide chart their father had folded for them. The string sang through Nell's fingers. Ada counted the yards as they went out, because counting was what she did while her sister did the daring.

By noon the kite was a speck over the lighthouse and the Wren was still not in sight. Their father had gone out on Monday with a promise to be back by the flood, and the flood had come and gone twice. Nell tied the line off on the iron ring at the end of the cobb and stood with her hands on her knees, breathing hard, looking out past the mole. Ada knelt beside her and found the string with her own fingers. It was taut, a single thread pulling up into the sky, and somewhere on the other end the paper was still answering the wind.

The Wren came in at four, low in the water and lamed on one side, and her father stepped off with his cap in his fist and no fish at all. He looked up first, the way he always did, and saw the red fleck hanging over the headland. "Who's flying that?" he called. Nell lifted both hands. Ada lifted hers too, and the three of them stood on the cobb holding the one line between them, nobody letting go.
