Two diving figures on the side of the torso

Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

Two small diving figures in red and white striped swimsuits are drawn in thin black outline, one diving head first and one feet first, with the lower figure mirroring the upper one. The linework is fine and even, with only the swimsuits filled in with red ink, and the plain skin around them keeps the composition minimal.

Sit you down on that bench, love, the 4.10 isn't due for twenty minutes and I've told this only to the pigeons. Up the hill there was the Marine Lido, and off its top board went the Halloran twins, Nell and Kit, in red and white stripes their mother cut from an old deckchair cover. Nobody on the prom could tell them apart in the air, only once they hit the water.

Nell went in head first every time, hands pressed together like a blade. Kit went feet first, toes pointed at the gulls, so that the pair of them made one shape when they passed on the way down, one figure rising while the other fell. Every August of that summer the crowd held its breath until both heads came up spluttering and grinning, and the lifeguard swore he'd never seen the like.

Then the railway wanted the land for the new line, the board came down, and in the autumn Kit took the boat train to Liverpool on a ticket paid for by a shipping man who'd seen her dive. Nell stood on this very platform with her costume folded in a carrier bag. She did not dive that winter. She waited, and wrote one letter that came back unopened.

Years later the 4.10 came in on a wet Thursday, and Kit stepped down from the third carriage feet first, the way she always landed. Nell lifted the carrier bag from the hook where it had hung all those years, and the two of them stood in the rain, one going up and one coming down, neither willing to be the first to hit the water.
