Matching otters holding hands
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two identical tattoos sit side by side, each showing two otters holding hands with a simple, continuous black outline. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the figures read clearly against the skin. The pair is framed close up, with each design centred on its own foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mum kept the otters on the allotment wall, two of them carved in slate by a man from Tavistock who never charged for the second one. Every summer we'd sit by the water butt and she'd tell the same story about the pair who lived under the weir at Coldharbour, the ones who floated on their backs in the eddy with their paws knotted together so the current couldn't split them up.

The trick, she said, was not to hold tight. Hold too hard and you pull each other under. You just keep one hand in the other's hand and let the river argue with you. The older otter, Bramble, had lost a sister to a flood the winter before, and she never stopped checking the surface for a small brown head bobbing away from her.
Then came the spring when the weir flooded and the young otter, Teasel, got carried down past the mill race. Bramble did not chase her. She floated on the eddy, paw out, and waited, because that was the only thing she had ever known how to promise. Teasel came round the bend three hours later, exhausted, and found the paw still there.
Mum always stopped there and looked at the water. "That's the whole sum," she'd say, and go back to her beans. I thought it was a lie until I was grown and it was me holding on in a hospital corridor, and I understood she had meant it as instructions, not comfort.
